Prof. Dr. Ashvind Bawa is the Founder and Director of The Hernia Institute at Bawa Hospital, Civil Lines, Ludhiana — a Centre of Excellence built around a single specialty: surgery of the abdominal wall.
Before founding the institute, Dr. Bawa spent sixteen years at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital — first as Senior Resident, then through Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and finally as Professor of Surgery and Unit Head from April 2023 to April 2026. During his tenure he also served as Convener of the Mentor-Mentee Program at DMCH.
His surgical interest sits firmly at the intersection of hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction, advanced wound care, the diabetic foot, and the application of artificial intelligence to surgery. He is currently Director of the North Zone for the AWR Surgeons' Community, and recently graduated as the Branding & Communications Champion of the Class of 2025 of the Advanced Management Program for Healthcare at the Indian School of Business.
Dr. Bawa is internationally recognised for complex abdominal wall reconstruction, infected mesh management, and AI-powered surgical-site-infection surveillance — work that has earned him invitations to faculty positions at Harvard Medical School, the American Hernia Society, the European Hernia Society, the Australian & New Zealand Hernia Society, the Russian Hernia Society, and the World Congress of Abdominal Wall Hernia Surgery.
